What is a towed impact roller? What is a towed vibratory roller?

Triangular Tractor-Mounted Impact Roller
Both the towed impact roller and the towed vibratory roller are classified as towed rollers—simply put, neither of them has built-in locomotion capabilities and must be operated by being pulled along by a towing machine.

Quadrilateral Towed Impact Roller Crusher
Among these, the impact rollers of towed impact compactors all feature non-circular polygonal structures. Depending on their specific geometric designs, they are categorized into triangular-impact compactors, single-wheel quadrilateral impact compactors, and dual-wheel pentagonal impact compactors.

Self-propelled Pentagon Impact Roller
The working principles of towed impact rollers and self-propelled impact rollers are identical. The triangular impact wheel generates a stronger impact force, making it particularly suited for compacting and reinforcing roadbeds. In contrast, the quadrilateral impact roller delivers a more moderate level of force, offering a balanced approach that allows it to both compact roadbeds and break up existing pavement surfaces. Notably, the quadrilateral impact roller features a single-wheel design, enabling efficient construction even on relatively narrow roadways. Meanwhile, the pentagonal impact roller produces a slightly weaker impact force compared to the triangular roller, making it ideal for tasks such as breaking up pavement and performing impact compaction on silty or sandy soils.

Self-propelled Vibratory Roller
The working principle of a towed vibratory roller is the same as that of a self-propelled vibratory roller—it relies on its own weight and excitation force to induce vertical, forced vibrations in the material being compacted, dramatically reducing the internal friction between soil particles and thus achieving the goal of soil compaction. The magnitude of the excitation force can be adjusted as needed.

Trailer-type vibratory roller
All tow-type vibratory rollers feature a single steel-wheel design. Depending on their weight and output power, they are categorized into light-duty tow-type vibratory rollers and heavy-duty tow-type vibratory rollers. Generally speaking, equipment with a self-weight of less than 10 tons can be classified as light-duty tow rollers, which are more commonly used internationally due to varying construction standards.

Lightweight Tractor-Mounted Vibratory Roller
Equipment weighing over 14 tons is classified as a heavy-duty tow-type roller, and it is widely used domestically. The heavy-duty tow-type vibratory roller is an indispensable compaction machine in the construction of foundations for large-scale projects such as highways, railways, dams, and airports—especially in large-scale earthwork filling operations. When the required compaction density exceeds 95%, the necessity and efficiency of this type of machinery become even more evident.

Heavy-duty tow-type vibratory roller
Lightweight tow-type vibratory rollers and heavy-duty tow-type vibratory rollers serve different applications. Depending on the required compaction depth and material type, you can choose between varying weights of towed roller drums or different levels of vibration force. Additionally, since lightweight tow-type vibratory rollers have relatively low self-weight, their power output often relies on the tractor pulling them, whereas heavy-duty tow-type vibratory rollers typically come equipped with their own high-power engines.
